We're spending the end of the year in Chicago with friends, but before the curtain closes on 2014 I wanted to pop in to wish everyone a very happy 2015 and to talk briefly about the past year. It's been a huge one for me, primarily because it's the year I started taking writing seriously as a career. It was a life changing decision, and one I'm so glad I made.
Late last December, I was defending my MA thesis and trying to figure out what to do next. I knew I didn't want to do another unpaid internship, which seemed to close a lot of doors off the bat. It had been a couple months since my first piece went live at xoJane, and I'd started writing regularly for Literally, Darling. I enjoyed writing, but at the same time I had dedicated years of education to pursuing a career in foreign policy. Part of me felt giving up on that was throwing in the towel, so I held writing at arms length.
I'm not really sure what changed, but one day I decided that I should start following the opportunities I was fortunate enough to be seeing rather than chasing ones that never quite materialized. I started pitching more heavily, looking for paying gigs, and most importantly writing constantly. A year later, the legwork has totally paid off, and I'm proud to say that I've come a long way. it's looking like mid-next year I'll be able to give up my day job and go full-time freelance, which is the next big step in my writing career.
I've been so lucky to work with so many amazing publications and editors in the past year. Each and every one of them has helped me hone my skills and encouraged me to push myself as a writer, which is priceless for someone just getting into the industry. In the next few months I have the privilege of working with publications I respect and admire a great deal, and I'm thrilled to be continuing with the amazing sites that I'm currently working with as a contributor -- Literally, Darling, WildSpice, HelloGiggles, and Trazee Travel.
To everyone I've worked with and to everyone who has read my work, thank you for helping me make 2014 one of the best years on record! Thank you for all your support, kind comments, shares, and time. It really means so much to me! I hope everyone has a fantastic and safe New Year's Eve, and a brilliant 2015!
